How to Control Color Difference in Plastic Bag Printing
In the custom plastic bag foreign trade industry, printing color difference is a core pain point that affects brand reputation and customer repurchase rates. Many cross-border merchants and brand enterprises that customize plastic bags with logos and patterns often encounter issues such as significant batch-to-batch color variation, obvious deviations from Pantone color numbers, inconsistent light and dark shades, and dull or overly bright colors. I. Pre-press Ink Formulation Process: Locking in Pantone Standard Colors at the Source

Flexographic printing of plastic bags is extremely sensitive to the production environment and equipment parameters. Fluctuations in workshop temperature and humidity, printing pressure, and anilox roller speed imbalances are major causes of batch color differences and inconsistencies between batches. Excessive temperatures cause ink to evaporate too quickly, resulting in lighter colors, while low humidity leads to uneven ink adhesion and mottled colors. Deviations in equipment parameters directly cause uneven shades within the same printed design.
To achieve stable color output, we have implemented a full-process standardized production control process. We maintain a temperature- and humidity-controlled dust-free printing workshop, strictly controlling the production environment within the industry's optimal printing range of 23±2°C temperature and 55%±5% humidity, eliminating color deviations caused by environmental factors. We also establish a daily equipment calibration system. Before startup and during batch changes, we uniformly calibrate core parameters such as flexo anilox rollers, printing pressure, film travel speed, and ink coating volume, ensuring that ink layer thickness and adhesion strength are completely consistent for each print run.
For plastic bags of different thicknesses and materials, we fine-tune process parameters accordingly. Matte film, glossy film, and frosted film have significantly different color rendering effects. We conduct substrate test printing in advance and adjust ink concentration and the number of printing layers based on the material's light transmittance and ink absorption rate. This solves the problem of inconsistent color rendering for the same color number on different films, ensuring that whether it's glossy transparent bags, matte frosted bags, or thicker food-grade bags, the Pantone standard color is accurately reproduced.

III. Dual Light Source Quality Inspection Process: Closed-Loop Control of Finished Product Color Difference Accuracy
Visual color matching under natural light by the human eye is the biggest loophole in color difference control. Natural light has different color temperatures in the morning and evening, and indoor lighting has significant color rendering deviations. This often leads to colors looking accurate in the workshop but showing significant differences upon shipment, which is the core reason why many factories have low color reproduction accuracy. To stably achieve over 95% Pantone reproduction accuracy, a standardized color evaluation system must be used for closed-loop verification.
We employ a dual-inspection process combining instrument measurement and standard light sources, establishing strict finished product color difference testing standards. All printed finished products are first tested using a high-precision color difference meter for data-driven color evaluation, accurately reading color difference values and strictly controlling them within the industry's high-precision standard of ΔE < 1.5. Products that do not meet the standard do not proceed to the next process. Subsequently, in an international standard light source color viewing booth, we simulate multiple lighting scenarios such as daylight, supermarket lighting, and indoor lighting. Using a 45° standard viewing angle, we conduct triple comparison and verification of the finished product against the original Pantone color guide and the customer-approved sample.
In addition, we strictly implement a three-stage quality control process: first-piece approval, mid-production random sampling, and final-piece review. After the order starts production, we first print samples for color confirmation, and mass production begins only after the customer signs off. During production, we take samples every 30 minutes for re-inspection to prevent gradual color differences caused by parameter drift during the process. At the end of the order, we conduct a final review to ensure that the entire batch is uniformly colored, with no shade variations or localized off-color issues. Even for large orders of tens of thousands of pieces, we ensure consistent color from the first to the last piece, perfectly matching the customer's Pantone color requirements.
